Balanced Literacy Agenda

The Four Pillars

Four pillars, one lesson.

Reading, writing, spelling and grammar are not four subjects taking turns. Each worksheet teaches one pillar while deliberately reaching into the other three — the same passage, the same words, the same sentences.

1

Reading

Deconstruct and model. Mentor text analysis, genre study and critical thinking, with evidence cited from the page.

2

Writing

Synthesise and create. Generative prompts, narrative and informational craft, then revision and publication.

3

Spelling

Decode and anchor. Morphological analysis of affixes, orthographic mapping, and word study in real context.

4

Grammar

Structure and mechanics. Parts-of-speech colour coding, sentence building and translation, functional syntax.
